Bitumen
Penetration, viscosity and performance grades for roads and waterproofing.
Overview
Bitumen is a thick, viscous, black petroleum-derived substance that occurs naturally or is obtained as a residual product of crude oil distillation. It is characterised by its strong adhesive and waterproofing properties, making it an essential material in road construction and pavement engineering, where it serves as the binding agent in asphalt mixtures. Beyond road infrastructure, bitumen is widely used in waterproofing applications for roofing, tunnels, pipelines, and hydraulic structures.
It is graded and classified based on its penetration and viscosity characteristics. Bitumen is traded globally, with demand closely tied to infrastructure development, construction activity, and government investment in transportation networks.
