Overview
Sunflower oil is pressed and extracted from the seeds of Helianthus annuus and is one of the four most traded vegetable oils. It is sold crude, for refining at destination, or refined, bleached, deodorised and winterised for direct use as a clear, neutral cooking oil. Standard linoleic oil is rich in polyunsaturated fat, while high-oleic varieties offer greater stability for frying and a longer shelf life.
Contracts specify free fatty acid content, peroxide value, moisture and colour. The Black Sea region is the main producing area, and the oil moves in bulk vessels, flexitanks or consumer packaging.
