Overview
ICUMSA 45 is the highest internationally recognised grade of refined white sugar, defined by its colour measurement under the International Commission for Uniform Methods of Sugar Analysis (ICUMSA). A rating of 45 ICUMSA units (IU) indicates an ultra-white, highly pure crystal with a sucrose content typically above 99.8%. It is produced through multi-stage refining: clarification by carbonatation or phosphatation, filtration and crystallisation.
ICUMSA 45 sugar is packed in 50 kg polypropylene bags or traded in bulk, and is the standard grade demanded by food manufacturers, confectionery industries, beverage producers, and pharmaceutical companies. Its price is benchmarked against the ICE futures contracts: Sugar No. 11 for raw sugar and White Sugar No. 5, in London, for refined sugar.
